1st Scripture Reading – Psalm 62

Song of Trust in God Alone

¹ For God alone my soul waits in silence;

from him comes my salvation.

² He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall never be shaken.

³ How long will you assail a person,

will you batter your victim, all of you,

as you would a leaning wall, a tottering fence?

⁴ Their only plan is to bring down a person of prominence.

They take pleasure in falsehood;

they bless with their mouths,

but inwardly they curse. Selah

⁵ For God alone my soul waits in silence,

for my hope is from him.

⁶ He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

⁷ On God rests my deliverance and my honor;

my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

⁸ Trust in him at all times, O people;

pour out your heart before him;

God is a refuge for us. Selah

⁹ Those of low estate are but a breath;

those of high estate are a delusion;

in the balances they go up;

they are together lighter than a breath.

¹⁰ Put no confidence in extortion,

and set no vain hopes on robbery;

if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

¹¹ Once God has spoken;

twice have I heard this:

that power belongs to God,

¹²     and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.

For you repay to all

according to their work.

2nd Scripture Reading – Matthew 19:16-26

The Rich Young Man

¹⁶ Then someone came to him and said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” ¹⁷ And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” ¹⁸ He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness. ¹⁹ Honor your father and mother. Also, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” ²⁰ The young man said to him, “I have kept all these; what do I still lack?” ²¹ Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” ²² When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

²³ Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. ²⁴ Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” ²⁵ When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, “Then who can be saved?” ²⁶ But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”
